Running Jackets

Running Jackets

Running is a sport that can be done in almost all weather conditions. For people who live in cooler climates, the cold doesn’t have to stop you from running. Many runners purchase running jackets, which allow them to continue to run but also stay warm and insulated. Running jackets are also perfect for early morning or evening runs when the temperature drops. The two main types of running jackets are zip-up jackets and pullover jackets.

Why They Help Performance

Running jackets keep you warm if you are running in cold conditions, and dry if you are running in the rain. They allow you to run without sacrificing mobility and enable you to stay comfortable in a wide range of conditions.

What are They Made of?

Running jackets can be made from a number of different materials. Most running jackets are manufactured with fabrics like Gore-Tex or Tyvek, which are water-resistant. These fabrics allow sweat vapor to pass through the garment, so that the garment effectively “breathes.” Other jackets may be made from wool or polyester, which are designed to keep you warm in colder conditions. Polyester is probably the most common, because it prevents moisture from getting through the fabric. Polyester is ideal for both rainy and cool conditions.

Washing and Care Instructions

Running jackets must be washed with the proper care to ensure they last for a long period of time. Before you place your jacket in the washing machine, remove all items from your pockets. Place the jacket in the washing machine with a moderate quantity of waterproofing liquid cleaner combined with cold water. These substances should work together to restore the jacket to its original look even after many washes. Once you have washed the jacket, you can dry it in the dryer with the tumble dry setting. If it is still damp, you will want to hang it to dry. Avoid using a high heat setting in the dryer, as this will likely cause the jacket to shrink, and may even damage the material. If there is a lingering odor in the jacket, due to sweat or something else, try soaking the jacket in a bucket of warm water and baking soda.

Who Makes Them?

There are a number of manufacturers who make running jackets. One of the most popular brands is Lululemon. Lululemon makes jackets for both men and women, and offers many different types, ranging from rain jackets to pullover sweaters. Nike is another popular brand, thanks in large part to its Dri-Fit technology, which helps keep you cool and dry in the heat and warm and insulated in the cold.

Price Range

Running jackets vary in price depending on the brand you intend to buy. Nike, for example, makes a number of water-resistant and dry-fit jackets, which typically cost a few hundred dollars. You should expect to pay at least $100 for a decent running jacket, and over $200 for a top of the line jacket. You may be able to find cheaper jackets from online retailers, although you should always try the jacket on before you buy it to make sure it fits correctly and is comfortable.
